    What is a Gastric Bypass?

If you are familiar with heart surgery, you might have heard the term bypass used in heart surgery circles. A bypass, simply put, is when one part of a particular organ is skipped by the normal flow. This type of surgery is done in many organs to allow the natural flow of material to go around a particular diseased or weak part of the organ, but in dietary terms it has a very different purpose.

A gastric bypass is done with the aim of decreasing the overall size of the stomach. To that end, blockers are installed over part of the stomach so that the material coming into the stomach will never reach a particular area of the organ. Instead of being able to reach this area, the material will simply skip it and go into other parts of the stomach, getting digested and then going onto the next organ as per normal once it has actually reached the stomach. The portion of the stomach that is blocked off during gastric bypass surgery will never be used for food storage after the surgery has been completed.

What is the goal of Gastric Bypass Surgery?

The goal of gastric bypass surgery is to get you to eat less. This is the primary point of dieting in general, except with a normal diet the lack of eating is voluntary. Your first chance at losing weight is to voluntarily regulate the amount of food you take in to the point where you end up losing weight. However, for people that do not have the willpower to do this, gastric bypass surgery represents a more serious alternative. Part of your stomach is literally blocked off from food, making the total volume of the organ in practical terms a lot smaller. When this happens, your ability to eat food in one sitting will be greatly diminished, in turn giving you a much smaller appetite.

How much does Gastric Bypass Surgery cost?

This depends on your personal information, your insurance information and the type of surgery that you want. Some of the basic packages can be as low as few hundred dollars for the surgery, although some of the larger packages can be as high as thousands of dollars if you decide to go for the support options that are offered in addition to the actual surgery. Most people do go for at least some of them, so your price range is between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars.

Do I need to visit my doctor regularly after Gastric Bypass Surgery?

While it is not a specific requirement of gastric bypass surgery in most cases, it is definitely a good idea. Visiting your doctor on a regular basis will allow you to make sure that nothing has gone wrong with the surgery and it will also allow your doctor to take regular stock of the progress that you are making in your overall health as a result of the surgery.
